Google Play services has stopped unexpectedly?

About every 5-10 minutes, I get an error message on my phone that says "The application Google Play services (process com.google.android.gms) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again". This started happening a couple of days ago. Whatever it is, it keeps trying to sync but it keeps crashing. I can't get it to stop trying to sync, either. When I go into settings and try to cancel it, it doesn't do anything.

I was thinking about removing it, but I know that it's used to updates for the Google Play Store, and I'd rather fix the problem instead of removing the app.

*The phone I have is Samsung Galaxy s2, and it runs 2.3.6.
