Can I virtually wipe out all contents on my stolen phone?

I was a pickpocket victim this past weekend, and the SOB stole cash, debit card, and my cellphone. I'm not worried about the cash or card. The card was cancelled within an hour of the incident. What worries me is all of the pictures and information on my cellphone.
Is there any way to virtually recover this information? Or… A way to virtually wipe the phone of all of the existing photos, contacts, etc? It makes me sick to think that he/she can see all of my pictures.

It is a samsung galaxy s3. I didn't have one of those tracking apps, which I deeply regret.

Is there any other way to track it? I called AT&T to disable the service.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
