How to edit the contacts on Samsung Galaxy S5?

I got the Samsung Galaxy S5 the day it came out, but my contacts never synced up. So i decided to just put them in myself. But if i want to add a contact photo it doesn't show the contacts. I go to the photo i want to put as the contact picture, tap set as… Tap contact photo. Then when i takes me to the list of contacts to select for the picture, it only shows the Free T-Mobile SMS for VVM contact. So then i tried to add the picture through the contact. So i go to the Contact and tap the edit icon. Then it takes me to where i can only edit the Name, Phone Number and Email. So if you have an S5 or know what i am doing wrong, please help.
