Why can't i connect my phone to the tv?

I bought this kit of Amazon that specifically said it would work with Samsung galaxy phones and tablets. I tried it with my s5 active, my s3 mini and, my s2. It just says no signal. I tried 2 different tvs and i did have the charger hooked up as well as the hdmi. Is there something I'm missing or is this kit a POS
