Update firmware on Samsung Galaxy S2 using Kies for Mac?

Hi, so my Samsung Galaxy S2 is running Gingerbread and i'd like to update it, i have tried downloading Kies for Mac and connecting via USB but my macbook does not pick up the phone. I something in the toolbar where you enter model name and serial n. For initializing but it said it wasn't valid?!
I tried using Kies Air and connecting wirelessly, everything on my phone (photos etc) shows up but there is no option to update firmware. I have searched the net so i know where on Kies i should be looking i just can't find the reason or solution.

Does anyone know, can you help?

Added (1). I believe the handset is unlocked and i bought it sim free, i am on EE.
