Can these factors affect phone reception?

I am thinking about getting a new phone with Sprint soon, and although many people say Sprint sucks, it's supposedly ahead of AT&T and Verizon in my college town, which is in the middle of nowhere. I asked a friend what phone company she had and she said Sprint, and that she did not get good reception. However, her service isn't based in our college town, and plus she has a real old smartphone (not sure of phone model, but it looked like a lower end model). My sister had the same experience in our much bigger hometown(Milwaukee, WI, a city of about 600,000) with T-Mobile, also with a lower-end smartphone. However, my friend who also lives in Milwaukee, has T-Mobile but he has a Samsung Galaxy S3 and he said he gets pretty good reception. So my question is, can the age and phone model affect the reception, as well as being outside where your phone service was activated?
