How do people find a job in astronomy?

When I graduate college, I want to go into astronomy. I am mainly interested in galaxies. I have been researching, and I have no idea how people get a job in astronomy. I have heard that they travel to different countries sometimes. If so, for how long? Is it possible to live near home and be an astrophysicist? How do astrophysicists find jobs? I know some work for nasa or for universities, but what are the odds? I really love this field, but do people actually get paid for researching? My teacher said jobs are only looking for people to fill in a needed position. How needed could researching be? This is something I am very interested in. Is it actually a career or just a hobby?
